HOW MANY SELF STORAGE FACILITIES ARE THERE IN THE U.S.? There are 48,500 “primary” self storage facilities in the United States (self storage is their primary source of business revenue) as well as 4,000 “secondary” self storage facilities.
HOW MANY SELF STORAGE FACILITIES ARE THERE IN THE WORLD? Worldwide, there are 59,500 self storage facilities. So as you can see from the last statistic, the majority of these facilities are located in the United States. There are also more than 3,000 in our neighbor to the north (Canada) and 1,000 in the land down under (Australia).
HOW MUCH SPACE ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? In total, there are more than 2.3 billion feet of self storage rental space in the U.S. (that’s three times the size of Manhattan!). The average self storage facility is composed of 46,500 average square feet. Amazingly, there are 7.3 square feet of self storage space for every man, woman, and child in America, so we could conceivably (and comfortably) all stand in self storage space at once.
WHERE ARE SELF STORAGE FACILITIES LOCATED? In the United States, most self storage facilities are located in suburban areas (52%), followed by urban (32%), and then rural (16%). About 83% of American counties have at least one “primary” self storage facility.
HOW MUCH DO SELF STORAGE FACILITIES MAKE? The average revenue per square foot will vary, of course, but in 2013, facilities earned $1.12 per square foot for non-climate-controlled units and $1.42 per square foot for climate-controlled units.
HOW MANY PEOPLE USE SELF STORAGE? About 8-9% of American households rent a storage unit. That is a 2-3% percent increase from 1995 when only 6% of households made use of a storage unit. Most of the people that rent storage units live in a single family household (68%) but about a quarter have an apartment or condo instead (27%).
DOES THE MILITARY USE SELF STORAGE? Interestingly, about 6% of storage units (more than 1.5 million) are rented to military personnel! In areas near U.S. military bases, 20-95% of all rented storage units are used by the military.
